Seniors Turn Out in Force on Day 29 of WSOP 2021
Poker players over the age of 50 had their shot at a Seniors Championship bracelet this week at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. They came out in the thousands to do so. Those 60 and over will have the chance to get involved on Sunday. In fact, a lot of fun events are on tap for this weekend, as the Colossus and Poker Players Championship get underway, with the Tag Team fun beginning on Sunday.
As for Thursday, it was an uncharacteristically light day at the 2021 WSOP. Four bracelets had been awarded the previous day and none on Thursday. Only three tournaments played, set their fields and prize pools, and played forward.
It was the calm before a very busy weekend, so let’s get through it quickly.
Event 52: $1K Seniors NLHE Championship
The second of the two starting flights for players 50 and over brought in a total of 5,404 entries. It didn’t meet the high bar set in 2019 with 5,916 entries, but it came close. More than 1,100 remain from both starting days and will come together on Friday to play down into the money. With 811 paid spots, the cashiers will be busy as players press on in the hopes of making Day 3.

Registration ended for this event with 212 entries, not the 278 of the 2019 WSOP but not too shabby, all things considered. And this year’s tally put the prize pool past the $5M mark. Day 2 of the tournament worked its way into the top 32 money spots, with that day’s original chipleader falling in 32nd place. Those who followed included Ben Yu, Joseph Cheong, Scott Seiver, and Chance Kornuth.
The list of players in the 25 returning for Day 3 is impressive, with Ben Lamb leading the way and David Benyamine, Shaun Deeb, Joao Vieira, and Bryce Yockey just some of the names in the top ten. The goal is to play down to five today.

When Alexandre Reard won his WSOP bracelet this week, the French were beyond thrilled. If not clear before, everyone saw their country pride at the bracelet ceremony.
