US Online Poker Revenue Down Again in September
It’s been a rough few months for online poker in the state-regulated market in the United States. September was no better, as the only state that saw a monthly online poker revenue increase was New Jersey.
We don’t have all of the relevant numbers, though. Keep in mind that Nevada doesn’t report revenue publicly, and Michigan doesn’t break out online poker from the rest of its igaming revenue. Worse yet, Connecticut and West Virginia have legalized online poker but only launched casino games so far. The US online poker market is stunted by numerous factors.
One more of those factors is the extensive and painfully long time it is taking to bring sites into the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA). Michigan agreed – as did Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware – to join its poker sites across state lines, but it hasn’t become a reality many months later. And there is still no word if Pennsylvania or any other state will join MSIGA.
It’s excruciating to watch a market with so much potential wallow in such a segregated space.
Meanwhile, online gaming in general continues to do well in nearly every state. The online casino games are the glue that keeps the igaming market growing and looking appealing to more states.
Delaware: September 2022
Of all components of the Delaware igaming industry, the only one to see a monthly drop was online poker. It dropped a significant 22.8% from August to September. That was after a 15.4% drop from July.
Meanwhile, the entire of igaming in the small state continues to rise, slowly but steadily monthly and significantly on a yearly basis.
-Sept 2022 online poker revenue of $28,679 = down 22.8% from Aug, up 5.7% from Sept 2021
-Sept 2022 total igaming revenue of $1,312,206 = up 1.2% from Aug, up 65.1% from Sept 2021
Michigan: September 2022
The Michigan igaming market hit a bit of a snafu in September, as total gross receipts dropped from the previous month. However, the decrease was relatively small and not a pattern.
Again, there is no indication of online poker revenue or percentage of igaming, as state’s regulator does not separate poker in its monthly reports.
-Sept 2022 total igaming revenue of $128,734,447 = down 1.7% from Aug, up 25.7% from Sept 2021
The state showed that it collected $23,988,686 in state taxes and payments from igaming operators. That was down 1.1% from the previous month but up 27.1% from 2021.
Nevada: September 2022
Nevada only offers online poker – no online slots or casino games. And the state releases no information regarding revenue.
New Jersey: September 2022
The online poker market in New Jersey was the only one to see growth from August to September. But with that said, online poker fell year-on-year by a significant percentage of almost 9%. At the same time, though, the entire internet gaming win increased as per usual on all fronts.
-Sept 2022 online poker revenue of $2,274,285 = up 3.1% from Aug, down 8.7% from Sept 2021
-Sept 2022 total igaming revenue of $135,245,169 = up 2.9% from Aug, up 10.3% from Sept 2021
New Jersey’s full gambling revenue number was solid in September, up from the previous month and more than 12% on the year.
Pennsylvania: September 2022
Online poker revenue dropped by the month and year in Pennsylvania. Since this is the only state running online poker that has not made a move to join MSIGA, it is unclear what the gaming regulator believes will happen to the poker sector of its igaming industry as a stand-alone business, without the benefits of interstate poker.
-Sept 2022 online poker revenue of $2,659,730 = down 2.9% from Aug, down 14.3% from Sept 2021
-Sept 2022 total igaming revenue of $112,728,528 = up 5.2% from Aug, up 15.2% from Sept 2021
Of course, online gaming in general increased for the month and year. The same happened for the entirety of the state’s gambling business, with a year-on-year increase of nearly 8%.
